Best Practices showed me alot that I already knew but, needed to revisit. I enjoyed the examples they gave in the book. I really learned alot about the integration of curriculum. I learned about this at Chowan in 1991-95 and we had to make a thematic unit which made alot of this make sense to me. How do you know if you are integrating correctly?
What a great question! In teaching, we often ask ourselves if we're doing things the right way. Perhaps our students are the ones who can best answer that question. Watch and listen to them, and they'll let you know if they're learning.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of times teachers try to integrate by taking a topic and teaching concepts related to that topic across subjects, but many times the concepts are still taught in isolation. When integration is done correctly students are able to understand the connections on how what is taught in language arts can help them in science and the concepts are made more real to them. In my opinion, the best integration is when children can have authentic experiences and see how the skills they are learning can better their lives.
